Hub Drive Motor VS Mid Drive Motor

We wanted to share a little insight into the Front/Rear Hub Drive Motor vs Mid Drive motor debate, and we came to the overall conclusion that the hub drive motors just better! Why you ask?

For starters you may have no idea what the difference is, well a hub drive motor means that the motor is mounted inside one of the wheels (front or rear). A mid drive motor is usually mounted in the centre of the frame of the bike, under the seat post.

EBikes with rear hub motors are just far more pleasant to ride than mid drive bikes. Its hard to describe, but its the way they feel when you ride them and most people don’t like the way it feels when riding a mid drive motor bike, boring is a comment often heard. You can only tell the difference once you have tried both, we do stock both styles, with the overall winner from you normally as consumers was definitely the rear hub motor. However it does depend a lot on the use for your bike, if it is for Mountain Biking it is probably a necessity due to the extra torque Mid Drives can have.

On our quality built Crooze Bikes, rear hub motors seamlessly deliver power right when needed, with plenty of up and go, its not dependent to what gear your in and does not matter how hard you are pushing down on the pedals, unlike mid drive motors you need to push on the pedals harder to get the power, but with hub drive you can almost free wheel while pedalling in the lowest gear. It’s almost like comparing a manual car with an automatic one. Crooze motors have the gears built within them and are completely sealed and self-contained, requiring no maintenance. Mid drive bikes are notoriously high on maintenance, as they place extraordinary strain on the chain, chain ring, derailleur, cassette and other parts, which will wear out much sooner.

In our experience the mid drive motor ebike also harvest complicated electronics and equally complicated gear shifting while riding. The novice riders finds this aspect especially annoying and far too technical to maintain. Euro mid drive bikes are just like expensive made European cars, over priced dealer support, expensive to repair out of warranty and especially if you need spare parts.

A Crooze bike is all about fun and being easy to pedal, power only when needed, especially up those hard hills. Crooze is a very low maintenance ebike, simple to repair and much more affordable for the everyday ebike consumer, whether it be for leisure or commuting. Cost and affordability is a major factor to consider when looking at an ebike, and you certainly don’t need to consider the ongoing costs!

I own two mid drive ebikes and just rented the hub drive for my stay on the Gold Coast in Queensland from Crooze. It was my first ride on a rear hub motor and I was thoroughly impressed and really enjoyed my time. The experience has shown me that it doesn’t really matter which one you choose, either style of ebike is light years ahead of the old fashioned non electric bikes. The rear hub motor was strong and responsive and each day the battery lasted a long and full day. The rear hub motor had the advantage that you didnt even need to put any force on the pedals to make the bike move forward, you just had to move the pedals. On my mid drives, there’s no assistance if there is no applied force. Why did I choose a mid drive over a rear hub? I live in some serious mountainous country where the gradients can get over 20% and you need all the force you can pedal, as well as the mid drive to assist in that effort. Would I buy a rear hub? Absolutely! It went up hills with ease and gave all the advantages you should expect from an ebike. If you haven’t ridden an ebike, you are seriously missing out on a great experience, mid drive or rear hub motor!!. Ps: you still get a workout! But you just go further before you get tired.
